Program or Intervention Summary

The QPRT Suicide Risk Detection, Assessment and Management training program (version 2.0) is an interactive online training program for professionals responsible the care and safety of consumers at elevated risk for suicidal behaviors in all settings and across the age span. A previously registered best practice, this training focuses on enhancing patient safety in any setting. Following foundational lectures on epidemiology, clinical risk patterns, and the current status of suicide risk assessment, clinicians learn how to conduct a standardized, evidence-based guided interview designed to elicit perceived burdensomeness, suicidal desire, intent, capability and buffers against suicide. Data collected is then contextualized within the patient’s current personal crisis to better understand, anticipate, and implement risk mitigation strategies, including evidence-based treatments.

Based on the quality of the relationship, the difficulty of the interview, and the reliability of the data collected, participants learn to make informed risk stratification decisions to determine the level of care recommended or required. Training includes modules on means reduction, collaborative crisis safety planning, managing/monitoring risk over time, documentation, and a skills practice sessions.

The training includes basic QPR training for potential colleague or relationship rescue opportunities, an orientation to Zero Suicide, training in verbal suicide risk screening, means reduction, safety planning, and caring contacts. A special modules teach best practices in avoiding suicide malpractice, postvention, pediatric risk assessment, and late-life suicide prevention. Permission for the copyright free use of the award-winning QPRT documentation system comes with the training (pediatrics, adult, inpatient and outpatient).

Since 1998 the program has been repeatedly evaluated by researchers, users, and stakeholder organizations. The QPRT and the QPR Institute’s training programs have been featured, recognized, or registered as best practices by the following organizations: the American Psychiatric Association Patient Safety Committee, the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, the Zero Suicide Institute, the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center/American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
