The Peer2Peer Mentoring Program addresses the increasing mental health needs of college students by fostering supportive, peer-based relationships that promote emotional well-being, resilience, and access to resources. Designed as a complement to traditional counseling services, the program connects students seeking support with trained peer mentors, many of whom are pursuing careers in helping professions. Goals include enhancing student connectedness, promoting early intervention, and equipping both mentors and mentees with lifelong interpersonal and coping skills. The program also aims to reduce stigma around mental health and increase help-seeking behaviors.
Populations Served
- Mentees: Students adjusting to college life, experiencing social isolation, or transitioning out of counseling services.
- Mentors: Students interested in helping professions who benefit from experiential learning and professional development.
Implementation Activities
- Recruitment and training of mentors in communication, boundaries, conflict resolution, and mental health awareness.
- Structured mentor-mentee matching and biweekly check-ins with program staff.
- Regular bimonthly meetings between mentors and their mentees.
- Ongoing support, supervision, and resource-sharing to ensure quality and continuity.
- Collaboration with campus services to facilitate referrals and reinforce a culture of care.
Outcomes Measured
For Mentees:
- Increased confidence in navigating college life.
- Progress toward personal and academic goals.
- Improved mental health and reduced feelings of isolation.
- Greater sense of belonging and connectedness.
For Mentors:
